EFI problem? No worries...

Hilaire and Speer Auto's are renowned for their expertise, proficiency and capability in recognizing, analysing and rectifying even the most intricate EFI difficulties, thereby enabling your car to operate as expected.

What is EFI?

Electronic Fuel Injection systems (EFI) incorporate a powerful fuel distribution setup operated by a tailored electronic control unit, or ECU.

This unit amalgamates the data accumulated from as many as 30 or more sensors. The ECU then interprets the gathered data to ascertain the ideal proportion of air and fuel necessary for the engine to perform most productively. Regular assessments of the EFI system are crucial as this will not only help you save on fuel costs but also decrease exhaust emissions.

As many as thirty or more sensors constantly update the data available to the ECU at any given time. The ECU uses this data to determine the correct mixture of air and fuel the engine requires in order for it to perform most efficiently. This can help reduce fuel costs and minimise exhaust emissions, making regular checks of the EFI system well worth the effort even if there are no apparent problems.

How do I know if my EFI needs servicing?

If you observe that your fuel consumption has abruptly dropped or that the car feels bumpy while idling, or even produces a classic backfire, then your EFI may need to be serviced.

Moreover, if the engine continues to run even after switching off the ignition, it's likely that there is something wrong with the EFI. Additionally, a notable drop in performance may also be indicative of an EFI issue.

When do I need an EFI service

A few EFI problems can be straightforward, like when the fuel tank is allowed to be fully drained or a clogged fuel injector.

However, certain issues may be obscure, entrenched deep in the complicated EFI system. This is where our highly-specialised Bomaderry car service workshop, with its advanced diagnostic apparatus, comes in to examine, repair and service your EFI.

By having a regular service or inspection of your Electronic Fuel Injection System, not only will your car be more efficient, but you'll also end up saving money at the pump. To make sure the EFI system works appropriately, a certified technician, with sophisticated diagnostic equipment, should be appointed to service or repair it. That's real Peace of Mind.

How Hilaire and Speer Auto's diagnose & fix EFI problems

  • Hilaire and Speer Auto's employ particular computerised diagnostic instruments to test the ECU (electronic control unit) of your car. The ECU is essentially a centralised computer which directs (among other things) the fuel injection process by gathering information from a number of sensors dispersed throughout the vehicle and making decisions in line with pre-programmed input. This data can then be obtained and interpreted by our diagnostic scan tools.
  • Oftentimes, the ECU is given false data by faulty sensors or external conditions. This is when we employ our adeptness and cutting-edge diagnostic coaching to correctly detect the issue.
  • The sensors, throttle valve, fuel filter, fuel pump and fuel injectors can be tested using electronic probes and visually inspected.
  • Any leaks must be spotted and repaired instantly as they will greatly reduce performance and fuel economy and could be potentially harmful to the engine parts.
  • Fuel lines, filters and valves, which could have been clogged with pollutants or tank sediments over time, must be purified or sometimes replaced.
  • If the sensors (or the wires connecting them to the ECU) are damaged or not functioning, they may have to be replaced. Although the car may technically be able to function without some of these sensors, all of them accumulate essential data for the performance, efficiency and safety of the car. The ECU might stop the car from running unless the sensors are all in working condition or set the vehicle to a limited operational mode known as 'limp mode'.

What is 'limp mode'?

When a car's electronic control unit (ECU) senses something abnormal in the data it receives, it sets a fault code and gives off some type of alert. This alert, commonly known as 'Limp Mode', may activate when the vehicle's fuel system is not operating correctly or when its components have experienced failure.

Limp Mode's purpose is to bring the car to a safe location and prevent further harm from occurring, either to the car or its passengers. If a car goes into Limp Mode, it is crucial that it be taken to a certified mechanic as soon as possible, even if the computer appears to have 'reset' itself. Unstable behaviour can still be expected in this mode.

Hilaire and Speer Auto's can help diagnose if the issue is an EFI related problem or if you need to look elsewhere for the cause of the cars behaviour.
